AwesomenessTV: The bet that paid off for Dreamworks
US telco Verizon's investment in AwesomenessTV values the multichannel network at $650m, double the value of the company at the point at which Hearst Corporation acquired a stake, and over six times the price that Dreamworks originally paid back in 2013. Verizon is taking a 24.5% stake in the video network, joining Hearst (24.5%) and majority owner Dreamworks (51%). The ever-expanding valuations of MCNs reflect their expanding viewer bases, growing importance to traditional media companies looking to target younger audiences 'lost' to traditional TV and address mobile devices (for which MCN content is often highly suited), and the improving nature of MCN positioning - with an increasing diversity of distribution platforms and outlets beyond YouTube.
