Profile: Failure to adapt to the times
Over a third of upcoming TV series are based on existing content, and over 250 titles currently in production are based on books. High profile streamers with considerable commissioning budgets can be seen to be splashing out on expensive intellectual rights such as Netflix's recent deal to adapt Gabriel García Márquezs's One Hundred Years of Solitude and Amazon's Lord of the Rings purchase. However, where we can see women taking on more lead roles in US drama, in literary adaptations, main roles tend to be more traditional, with more group or male dynamics taking the forefront.
