Profile: DirecTV and the World Cup

The FIFA World Cup 2018 was a hugely popular event for consumers, offering opportunities for TV providers to capitalise on its popularity to gain new subscribers. In Latin America, DirecTV was the only operator offering coverage of all 64 games and this was reflected in a spike of subscribers in Q2 2018, followed by a slump in Q3. Despite the Q3 drop, its Latin American base remains significantly larger than it was before the World Cup, indicating that DirecTV's strategy may be a good blueprint for other large operators to follow when approaching global TV events.
