Amazon sleighs the festive competition
Ahead of the upcoming holiday season, Ampere’s analysis reveals that Amazon Prime Video’s streaming catalogue features more movie and TV titles containing the words, ‘Christmas’, ‘Santa’, ‘Reindeer’, or ‘Snow’ than any other SVoD service globally, with more than twice as many festive titles as rival Netflix. Most Amazon Christmas titles are movies.
Netflix shows no signs of wrapping up its Christmas Originals
While Amazon has the highest volume of Christmas content available to stream, Netflix has invested the most in its catalogue of Original festive titles. Indeed, the volume of Original Christmas content available to stream on Netflix increased by 544% between Q3 2018 and Q3 2021, and Netflix now has nearly ten times more festive Originals than any other streaming service.
The appearance of characters from A Christmas Prince in the new-for-2021 film A Castle for Christmas also confirms suspicions that all Netflix Original Christmas content exists in the same ‘cinematic universe’, creating the potential for future Christmas-crossover events that span the worlds of popular franchises like The Princess Switch and A Christmas Inheritance.
Committing to a more inclusive festive season, albeit a year later than its leading Christmas competitors Lifetime and Hallmark, Netflix also debuted its first festive title featuring same-sex romantic leads in December 2021 with a male-led rom-com, Single all the Way.
There’s snow place like home
Newer streaming service Disney+ attempts to steal some of the Christmas glory from more established services, with fewer, high-profile festive original titles such as Home Sweet Home Alone, a remake of the original 1990 Home Alone movie. HBO Max is also hoping to attract viewers over the holiday season with the hotly anticipated Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, slated for release on the 1st of January.
