Vudu launches free movie streaming service
In mid-October 2016, Vudu released a free, ad-supported streaming service called 'Movies On Us'. Ampere data shows that the titles offered by this service tend to be older movies, released before 2010, and are also low on the popularity rankings for its transactional video service. This suggests that Vudu may be recycling its less demanded titles to generate ad-revenue and as a way to advertise its HD streaming service.
The majority of the movies on the free service are distributed by either Lionsgate, The Orchard, or New Video. Noteable absences from the service include Sony Pictures and 20th Century Fox. Warner Bros, despite being the main distributor for Vudu's transactional service, only features six of its titles on 'Movies On Us'.
