Updates to Nvidia GeForce Now should expand its user appeal
At Gamescom 2025, Nvidia announced a slew of important updates for its GeForce Now (GFN) cloud streaming service. Starting September 2025, GFN will roll out improved low-latency L4S technology, cinematic quality streaming (CQS) mode, a Play Instantly Discord and Fortnite feature, an Install-to-Play feature, and powerful Blackwell GPU servers, designed for AI and high-performance computing, that will deliver an improved visual experience and reduced lag.
Complementing the performance upgrades is GFN’s new Install-to-Play feature that allows users to play titles outside of the GeForce library. This feature allows GFN users to install games from Steam’s cloud service on to GFN servers, though not all games sold on the Steam store will be available: Game publishers must opt-in to the Steam cloud service when distributing a title through the Steam store. However, this feature stands out since it is likely to increase GFN’s addressable audience with less effort compared to the other features.
Indeed, the new Install-to-Play feature will broaden the service’s appeal as new game titles become available on the Steam cloud service. Ampere's Q2 2025 Games Consumer survey indicates that 8 of the top 20 titles that Geforce Now users enjoy playing are not currently available on the service, most notably the three franchises published by Electronic Arts (EA), and NBA 2K - published by 2K. Collectively, these four game franchises averaged over 36.8 m MAUs on console and Steam PC over the last 12 months (August 2024 - July 2025). EA Sports FC and NBA 2K alone averaged 24.5m and 6.9m users respectively over the last 12 months (August 2024 - July 2025), so bringing these franchises to GFN would increase both the publishers’ and Geforce Now’s addressable audience.
An expanded GeForce Now library combined with graphic and latency improvements forms a compelling console-less gaming offering, but will have an even greater impact with the support of publishers such as EA and 2K. Tellingly, both publishers have announced that their upcoming marquee releases, Borderlands 4 (2K) and Battlefield 6 (EA), will be available on GFN.
