Ubisoft partners with Gamestream to develop cloud gaming capabilities

Ubisoft has already brought its games to cloud platforms through the Ubisoft+ channel on Amazon Luna and Google Stadia; however, streaming its games through the cloud is not currently possible outside of these two services. Ubisoft’s own game launcher – Ubisoft Connect – requires games to be downloaded to a PC in order to play. In contrast, using a Ubisoft+ subscription through Luna and Stadia allows streaming across multiple devices.

A key outcome of this partnership could be adding cloud gaming capabilities to Ubisoft Connect or the Ubisoft Store, although details of what the partnership will entail have not yet been released. Possible developments to Ubisoft+ or Ubisoft Connect with Gamestream’s cloud technology may include: immediate access to stream demos or games while downloads take place after purchase through the Ubisoft Store; and Ubisoft’s own cloud service, enabling streaming to multiple devices through Ubisoft’s own software

In January 2022, Ubisoft+ offered 115 games to download to PC in the US, whereas players on Luna and Stadia had a limited selection of these titles to stream. Access to Ubisoft+ on these services is included in the Multi Access subscription tier, priced at $17.99 per month for PC downloads as well as cloud gaming, with the PC Access (download only) tier priced at $14.99 per month. Paid subscriptions to Luna and Stadia are not required in order to access the Ubisoft+ channel – only the Multi Access Ubisoft+ subscription is needed.

Ampere Games Consumer research indicates that 85% of Ubisoft+ subscribers do not have subscriptions to Luna or Stadia, with Luna available only in the US. This suggests there is a large proportion of their subscriber base who do not stream Ubisoft games that Ubisoft could target if it were to develop its own cloud gaming offer with Gamestream.
