IPTV drives pay TV growth in Portugal, France, Spain

Pay TV is finally emerging from the economic turmoil which engulfed a number of Southern European markets following the 2007-2008 financial crisis. Between 2017 and 2022, Ampere expects that pay TV revenue growth will marginally outpace economic growth across the region – averaging at between 3%-4% per year. It is primarily the telecoms groups which have emerged in the lead from the recession. IPTV is driving pay TV subscriber growth in three markets (France, Spain and Portugal), whilst infrastructure challenges and heavy competition between Sky and Mediaset is holding back telco TV development in Italy. In Greece, poor broadband infrastructure limits the addressable market for IPTV, but incumbent telco OTE has instead used satellite TV to drive its premium rights play.

Ampere explores the origin of these trends across five Southern European markets in its latest report "TV in Southern Europe."
