HBO and Netflix lead the way in 2016 Emmy TV series nominations.
This year's Emmy nominations has again highlighted the impact Netflix has made on TV series production. Both Netflix and HBO have five series nominated over the four main categories - Comedy Series, Drama Series, Outstanding Limited Series and TV Movie. Netflix has steadily increased its output of original content over the last year which has been reflected in critical acclaim, although originals only represent less than 5% of the Netflix US catalog. The only category in which Netflix does not feature is in the Outstanding Limited Series. However, in categories that offer more prospects for future seasons such as Drama and Comedy series, Netflix and HBO have secured 50% of the nominations. These categories are undoubtedly a more attractive investment for Netflix given its subscription model.
